UK bookmaker Betfred has entered a public disagreement with the Treasury regarding the upcoming closure of 132 retail locations. The operator recently launched a consultation process to reduce its physical footprint across the country.
Regulatory Pressures and Store Reduction
Founder Fred Done attributes the reduction in store numbers to increased fiscal and regulatory pressure within the British market. He stated that "over-taxing and over-regulating" the sector are forcing the company to adjust its retail operations. The consultation phase will determine which specific branches remain open. Done described the decision to close individual locations as a difficult process, comparing each closure to "killing your own babies" while noting that current market conditions left no alternative.
